What are electromagnetic shields?

Electromagnetic shields are devices designed to lower the electromagnetic field in a space by essentially barricading it in with magnetic or conductive material such as copper.

Electronic shielding is used to prevent other electromagnetic currents from interfering with your device which could affect how it works or cause it to become unusable altogether. It also protects against interfering signals.

What are the different types of electronic shielding materials?

The most popular metals that are used in RFI shielding are pre-tin plated steel, copper alloy770 (also known as nickel silver), copper, and aluminum. They each serve their own purposes and can be used to suit different uses.

Pre-tin plated steel
This is a great low-cost solution to electronic shielding and works well at suppressing lower frequencies. The permeability value of carbon steel is within the low hundreds range, meaning that it provides low-frequency magnetic shielding that the other materials don't.

Copper Alloy 770/Nickel Silver
This is more commonly referred to as alloy 770 and contains copper, nickel, and zinc to aid the EMI shielding applications. This material is usually favored because of its corrosion-resistant properties. This material shields well against frequencies in the mid kHz range up to GHz.

Copper
This is the most reliable material for EMI shielding due to its ability to attenuate electrical and magnetic waves. You'll often find this type of EMI shielding in things like MRI scanning machines and other hospital facilities.

Aluminum
This metal has non-ferrous properties and a high rate of conductivity at almost 60%. When using this material, you need to be extremely careful of corrosion and oxidation that could occur, as this material turns into an oxide over time.
